The 2nd edition of the binair01 balkan sessions grows to festival proportions with film, food, concerts and dj-sets dedicated to balkan music. It is a cheery celebration of its incredible versatile faces and its ability to fuse genres and people. The concert section combines one of the very best orkestars from the balkans with one of the very best from the belgistans.
Tonight’s program consists of 3 milestones in the history of balkan music. The irresistible bohemian atmosphere of the iconic movie ‘Black Cat, White Cat’ by Emir Kusturica caused in 1998 the first waves of what later would become a balkantsunami in Europe. Belgium joyfully joined the surfing, and the Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra is undoubtedly the low country’s loudest cursing fish splashing around in the steamy bouillabaise of East-European gipsies and Jamaican rebels. Their latest album features beautiful collaborations such as Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Marko Marković, son of Boban, together the most important half of one of those 3 world famous Balkan Brass Orkestars.
The most legendary one since 20 years is Kočani Orkestar, Macedonia's most successful export product of funky asymmetric 7/8 or 9/8 aksak rhythms and powerful balkan horns (4 tuba’s!) with a Latin touch. Their second 2002 album was adopted by artists all over geographic and music style barriers – from NY’s Balkan Beat Box through Belgium’s Buscemi till Beirut, they all used secret Kočani tunes for their best breeds. This original orkestar modeled ‘balkan music’ to what we all know today as a genuine unrivalled party concept.
The wild balkan party in the Kelderzaal is separately accessible and is driven by 2 dj’s. Radio Barbã will swipe a new school balkanic swing around Transylvania, dropping the dancefloor in a boiling mix of explosive tunes. Mnsr zér0 is the mixmaster who learnt Gent to balkanhop since 01.01.11. Don’t be mistaken though: he always varies endlessly in style and rhythm by mixing swingwhirls with gipsypleasure and other Afro-Latin cumbiamaniacs. Be prepared for the first balkan festival Ghent has ever known since the confluence of Schelde and Leie.
